| After winning all eight races up until today, Blair Mclay, from New Zealand, is very close to attaining the championship title of World Radial Youth. But to be the champion, he has a great challenge ahead: Portuguese, Frederico Melo, is just 2 points behind and has also won the two regattas of his fleet. This Friday, with the beginning of the final phase, they will compete in the same regatta for the first time. The sailors will race with the gold fleet in a duel that is sure to surprise everybody. “I believe
I accomplished all these victories thanks to my
good fitness. I have been training a lot and trying
hard to get the leadership”, said a satisfied
Blair. Frederico is also confident on his own
victory. “The day was great. I sailed very
well and recovered my good performance of the
first days. I know I can be at the highest place
of the podium”, he declared.
André Ribeiro, from Ceará,
now is the best sailor between brazilian because
Daniel Kacobsson broke the mast of his boat at
the first race and lost positions. Jakobsson managed
the problems and came back just in time to run
the second one. André ended the day 5 positions
above yesterday, in13th place. “It was one
of my best days. I am in peace with my boat, he
reveals.
New Zealander Cushla Hume-Merry
is still the best between female athletes, in
43th position. Fernanda Decnop keeps leading between
brazilian women.
On this Friday the emotions of the
final regattas begin, when the athletes will be
divided in 2 fleets, gold and silver. The first
51 at the general classification will be part
of gold fleet and will battle 2 days for the main
prize. The others will belong to silver fleet
and will fight for the rest of the positions.
The competition goes on until Saturday between
103 athletes from 26 countries. Radial Youth reunites
youngsters until 18 years old considered the next
generation of Laser.
The Laser Worlds 2005 includes
four world championships: Senior (September 19th
to 28th), Master (September 30th to October 8th),
Radial Open & Women (December 3rd to 9th)
and Radial Youth (December 10th to 17th). The
events are organized by the International Laser
Class Association, Brazilian Laser Class Association,
Ceara State Sailing Federation, Brazilian Sailing
Federation and Yacht Club of Fortaleza. The sponsors
are: Ceara State Government, thru the Sports and
Youth Bureau, Marina Park Hotel and Hamburg Süd.
The event also has the support of the brazilian
navy, Banco do Nordeste do Brasil, Mayor of Fortaleza,
Unilink, Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club and Pirata
Bar.
