RADIAL OPEN & WOMEN - December, 6th 2005

PAIGE COMES OUT IN FIRST AT THE RADIAL WOMEN. IGOR LISOVENKO HOLDS THE LEAD AT THE OPEN

The last day of the qualifying fase at the Radial Open & Women confirmed the lead of russian Igor Lisovenko e expectations about american Paige Railey. Both are in first place with a three point advantage over their runners-up. After six races, was put away the worst result from each one of the 165 sailors, counting the other five. The classification defined the gold fleet. The top 45 at the Open and the top 38 at the Women will continue to pursue the title. The other ones will keep sailing to find out their final position at the World Championship. Eighteen brazilians made the Open gold fleet and none the Women.

Igor Lisovenko is seventeen and finished second in the 2005 european circuit. He was supposed to participate only in the Radial Youth, from december 10th to 17th, for athletes under-18, but arrived in time for the Open and now is a strong title candidate. The windspeed, that went up to 12 knots after two days below 10, didn´t affected his outcome. ‘’I don´t worry about if the wind is lighter or stronger. I only care about a good or bad result’’. said. Brazilians took from second to fifth place, with Eduardo Couto, Daniel Jakobson, Tiago Rodrigues e Andreas Perdicaris.

At the Radial Women, Paige Railey made worthy all the prospect about her before the championship. The north-american, that won five of the seven competitions she was in this year, has the regularity as her best quality so far. Even without winning any of the races, she took the lead based on a higher average position than the opponents. ‘’ I’m not thinking about the title yet. The winds got stronger and for now i plan to stay among the first positions’’, says. German Petra Niemann comes in second e former leader Sarah Blanck fell to third position.

The races goes on until Friday. The points from the qualifying fase will be added to the ones of the next six races, and each sailor is entitled to one discard before the final classification.

The Laser Worlds 2005 includes four world championships: Sênior (September 19th to 28th), Máster (September 30th to October 8th), Radial Open & Women (December 3rd to 9th) and Radial Youth (December 10th to 17th). The events are organized by the International Laser Class Association, Brazilian Laser Class Association, Ceara State Sailing Federation, Brazilian Sailing Federation and Yacht Club of Fortaleza. The sponsors are: Ceara State Government, thru the Sports and Youth Bureau, Marina Park Hotel and Hamburg Süd. The event also has the support of the brazilian navy, Banco do Nordeste do Brasil, Mayor of Fortaleza, Unilink, Rio de Janeiro Yacht Club and Pirata Bar.
