What is the difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org?

People are often confused about the differences between WordPress and WordPress.com. The key difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org is who’s actually hosting your website.

WordPress is the free, Open Source web publishing software project, is a charitable organization called: WordPress Foundation founded by Matt Mullenweg. The core WordPress software package can be downloaded by anyone from WordPress.org, or it can be installed as part of a hosting package from a web hosting provider. WordPress.com also supports WordPress.org.

WordPress.com is a hosted blogging service run by a company called Automattic that was created by one of the founders of WordPress.  Users don’t have to download or install WordPress—it’s part of the hosting services that WordPress.com provides. WordPress.com offers multiple plans starting with the basic free account. For more services and options such as adding a custom theme, users can move up to paid plans that include Personal, Premium, and Business.
